In the U.S. there are 9 General Consulates, which are responsible for certain states in the U.S. These are:

Due to the fact that one general consulate is responsible for more than
one state; sometimes there is still a long driver. Consequently,
to ease the access to a German consulate in the U.S., the German
government created additional so-called “Honorary
Consulates”. However, the first point of contact should
always be your attorney or the General German Consulate so they can
refer you to a German-speaking attorney in your area.
