Considering renouncing your U.S. citizenship?

First, it is important to be aware that one can only renounce their citizenship in person, by the person who wishes to renounce their citizenship and before a consular or another Secretary of State designated authority.
Things to consider when renouncing U.S. citizenship:
- Renouncing citizenship may have no affect on U.S. tax or military service obligations.
- Prosecution for crimes allegedly committed in the U.S. cannot be avoided.
- Financial obligations accrued in the U.S. or as a U.S. citizen cannot be avoided.
- Renunciation cannot be canceled and is permanent; you cannot become a U.S. citizen in the future.
- In order to return and live in the U.S. you must have proper documentation, such as an approved visa.
- If you have not successfully attained citizenship in a foreign country you will be considered stateless and you will not be protected under any government.
